Benchwood Station – Miller Lane Improvements Project
Miller Lane is the backbone of Benchwood Station, Butler Township’s main business district, and therefore the township leaders recognize the importance of maintaining this community asset. A Feasibility Study was conducted in 2021 to investigate the safety, operation, infrastructure, and aesthetics of the Miller Lane corridor.
TRAFFIC IMPACT:
Traffic will be maintained during construction except for a brief detour during the roundabout construction at Maxton. Please drive carefully.
CONSTRUCTION TIMING:
Construction will begin in the Spring of 2024, anticipating completion at the end of 2024.
COST:
Construction costs are approximately $6 million.
COMMUNITY BENEFIT: From Benchwood Road to Little York Road, Miller Lane is the main thoroughfare to access many retailers, restaurants, and hotels in this area. The study included analyzing travel factors through the corridor and obtaining public input. A plan was developed to:
- Improve the safety, operation, and condition of Miller Lane infrastructure
- Improve pedestrian connectivity from Benchwood to Little York
- Give Benchwood Station an identity as a destination and improve overall aesthetics
DETAILED SCOPE: After the study, the preliminary plan details of the project were shared for stakeholder comments. Final design and construction plans were completed in November 2023.
Approved improvements include:
- Pedestrian and street lighting for the entire Miller Lane corridor
- A roundabout at Maxton and Miller for traffic calming and beautification
- Full-depth pavement repair and resurfacing of existing pavement on Miller Lane
- A dedicated right turn lane on westbound Benchwood Road to Commerce Center Drive
- Consistent landscaping and streetscape enhancements along the entire corridor
- Benchwood Station monument signage at Miller Lane and at the roundabout
